As a young girl I was fascinated by film. I loved everything about the industry… the storytelling, the glamour, the creativity. It all fascinated me. I took classes in theater, arts, and dance. However, I was told that in order to succeed in life and not become a “starving artist,” I would have to get a “real education.” So I followed orders and went to a prestigious university in Toronto, Canada. After two years of being bored and confused, I decided to take a year off from my underwhelming university education to “find myself.” Three years later, after traveling through Europe, I landed in Washington, D.C. at Howard University studying broadcast journalism and spending the summer interning at CBS News and working at radio stations throughout the Washington DC metropolitan area.
I moved to Miami, Florida to launch and host a television show centered on the Caribbean, worked as a public information and promotions specialist for a local Public Television station, and eventually became the Director of Marketing and Communications for Miami-Dade County.
A Tragic Loss
After the tragic loss of my sister in 1995, I realized the importance of living EACH day to its fullest and enjoying life. This meant returning to my true love and passion, film.
Discovered My Mission
Realizing that women directors and producers were extremely underrepresented (less 7%), I wanted to do something to bring about change. So I did the unthinkable.
Return To My First Love
I quit my full time job and founded the Women’s International Film & Arts Festival, an annual event which presents films made by women from around the world with the mission of empowering our visions and voices… and I haven’t looked back.
I started The Women’s International Film & Arts Festival & Conference (WIFF) to bring women together annually to share and present our films, network, and address issues that effect women globally. Since then, WIFF has held events in Miami, Florida, New York City, Liverpool England; and Medellin, Colombia.
We were honored to present our first full scale festival to Miami featuring 40 films in 4 Days, workshops, and celebrities, including Oscar Nominee Adriana Barraza and the return of our Founding Honorary Chair, Grammy, Emmy and Golden Globe winner, Ms. Ruby Dee.
Invited to Liverpool to participate in the European Capital of Culture, we presented films made by British women filmmakers. Hometown of the Beatles, Liverpool kicked off the year with drummer Ringo Star and concluded with a performance by Paul McCartney. In Miami, Latin Grammy artist Lucrecia kicked off WIFF’s opening night event along with legendary actress Ally Sheedy – Actress/Director Victoria Rowell also presented her film.
WIFF hosted a special screening of The Call starring Morris Chestnut and Emmy, Golden Globe, SAG and Oscar Winner Halle Berry. We also traveled to Medellin, Colombia for our first event in South America. During the Film Festival in Miami, we presented 50 films in 5 days tackling issues such as breast cancer, human trafficking as well as comedies and romance films. We won Best Film Festival in Miami for the second time!
Reel Moments with (BadAss) Women in Film & Entertainment was created to examine issues of women in film, music, and entertainment. We ask our guests about their experiences and to provide value by giving advice to those who may want to follow in their footsteps.
The Women’s International Film Festival TV (WIFF-TV) Streaming Platform is a new, online streaming service featuring films, tv, and podcasts made by, about and for Women. For Women. By Women. On Demand. You can check out all the content at www.wifftv.com.
